The Fugitive (ชีวิตของผู้หลบซ่อน)

       Valora couldn’t believe her eyes when she barged into the lab. The pain in her right leg went away in an instant when she saw Garret’s lifeless body floating in the tank, filled with his blood. She panicked and screamed like never before, her face drenched in sweat and her legs froze still, but despite the gruesome scene she’s beholding, Val noticed something is amiss, all of the venom were gone.

 

       After the shock has worn off and she stopped screaming, Val rushed to the tank control panel. She was going to open the hatch when Salazar radioed her.

 

       “Val, this is Salazar, we got the E.P. agents on the run, Ringo is safe with the others and we're pushing them back as I speak"

 

       "What about the children? Last I heard they were..."

 

       "They are still being loaded into their carrier and none of us can get through to them. Not with their aassault choppers picking us off whenever we go out into the open, where’s Garret?”

 

       “Inside the venom tank, he dipped himself in it……now it's filled with his…blood.”

 

       “What!!?! Is he alive? We need him to hold off these suckers.”

 

       “I don’t know, the panel isn't showing any pulse……his blood is still flowing into the tank and the venom are gone, all of it are gone Salazar, not a single drop left….I…..I don’t know what to do.”

 

       “Valora!! keep it together!! Now tell me, what’s going on in there?  Is he turning into one of them? Any sign of mutation?”

 

       “No….no, I don’t think so. There’s no apparent physical metamorphosis yet, but I couldn’t see any venom left in the tank…..what should I do? He’s got no pulse Salazar….he’s got no pulse…...and if the venom are gone then it can only means…..”

 

       “Look, calm down girl. Keep it together; what you can do now is to get him out of the tank. We don’t know for sure if he’s still alive or not, so don't get your hopes up.”

 

       “What do you mean we don’t know!!? There’s no pulse Salazar!! He's dead!! I got him killed!! I just got our only hope killed!! There’s.....there's so much blood….I couldn’t even see him inside that tank…….I couldn’t….I couldn’t save….I.....”

 

       Val collapsed, her mouth couldn't utter any words; she couldn’t even find the courage to look at the blood filled tank before her, her eyes started to fill with tears as her mind breaks apart. And even though Salazar was still yelling at her through the radio, her ears have gone completely silent. Even though the outside of the lab was surrounded by explosions and screams, Val couldn’t hear anything else but the sound of her tears dropping to the ground before her.

 

       Suddenly, a faint signal rang throughout the lab; it broke the silence in her ears and instantly got her attention. Val looked up at the tank control panel, she wiped her tears away and focused on the faint signal coming from the tank.

 

       “Salazar…I think I got a pulse…..Garret’s still….alive”

 

       Val walked slowly toward the crimson tank filled with Garret’s blood, she tries to locate Garret inside the tank, but not even her eagle eyes can see through the thick layers of red water before her.  

 

       Suddenly, a hand came through the blood and touches the surface of the tank's glass, Val was startled and backed away instantly. She looked closely at the tank control panel and saw a rapidly increasing pulse activity. As her vision starts to clear up, she can see Garret’s blood flowing back into his body. Val slowly walked toward the tank again; she looked at Garret closely

 

       “Salazar….I see Garret!! He’s alive!!, his pulse is coming back!!…..he’s alive!!!”

 

            "Really? well that's great!! how does he look? Is he still human?"

 

       "Yes...but he looks so weak, I'm going to take him out of the tank, come quickly Salazar,he needs our help!!"

 

       “Alright, just make sure he’s still alive by the time we……Wait!! One of their choppers is closing in on you!! Get Garret out of that tank and run!! "

 

       Val quickly opened the tank, but before she could get to Garret, the chopper has already fired its rockets at the facility, destroying the whole HQ and burying the labs underneath with rubble.

 

       “Val!! Val!!!! Do you read me? The whole HQ is blazing like hellfire, are you alright?”      

 

       Val pushed away a small rubble that fell on her, she got up on her feet and grabbed on to a debris nearby.

 

        “I…I’m fine, what happened?”     

 

       “The chopper unloaded its rockets on the facility, can you see if anyone’s injured?”

 

       “No...no one's here when I came back. They must have gone to the......Oh god…Garret!!!”

 

            "We’re on our way back. Be careful, the whole thing is going to collapse"

 

            Before Val could answer Salazar, she noticed that the room has started to shake; the effect of the rocket blast has rendered the whole construct unstable, she looks up at the ceiling and before her eyes was a big chunk of concrete falling down.

 

       Val tried her best to move away from the site, but her legs were too injured. She could only close her eyes and screams in horror as the debris falls closer and closer onto her.

 

       Suddenly, a sound of lightning echoes from the far side of the room, and before long, a loud explosion came along with it.  

 

       Val could feel a sudden surge of cool wind blowing through her face and hair, as if she was standing atop a mountain. She slowly opened her eyes and Garret was there, right in front of her, blasting away all the debris and disintegrating any that slipped past him with his electrical field.

       She was in awe at the sight of Garret, who minutes ago were so weak and bleeding an ocean, are now standing infront of her, protecting her from harm. She couldn't find any words to describe how relived she was, but a sudden realization came to her mind, and she started to draw back from the man infront of her.

 

       “Ga…..Garret? Can you hear me?”

 

       Garret turned to her, his eyes were glowing white with electrical sparks all over his body. His hands were engulfed with overwhelming electricity. Val was startled, she gradually backed away from him in fear, her eyes looking everywhere for any kind of weapons that she could use, her hands drenched in sweat and her thoughts filled with fear.....until Garret let out a laugh.

 

       “What? you scared of me or something? Come on Val, I just saved you from becoming a mashed potato.”

 

       “Ho...how am I supposed to know that you are still the same Garret I knew....the venom could've turned you into a mindless monster like all the other failed test subjects out there!!”

 

       "It's fine, come on, I'm still joking with you right?"

 

       Garret smiled at her, and offer his hand. Val took it and got up on her feet.

 

       "More importantly....how are you feeling? any strange symptoms or nausea, or anything?"

 

       "None that I know of. Why?"

 

       "Well, when I got the first dose, I vomited blood, so I thought....whatever, how are you feeling?"

 

       “Better than ever, it's like I'm overflowing with electricity...and I can sense, pulses....and wavelengths....even radio frequencies, I can hear all the chatter.......this is even more than I could've hoped for......wait a sec....Val, your leg...”

 

       Garret rushed to her side, but suddenly turned his attention toward the north, he felt a strange frequency quickly approaching him.

 

       "Garret!! Val! the chopper is coming back for another bombing run, get down!!"

 

       Salazar shouted at them through the radio, Garret was surprised at the chopper quickly approaching at him, Val managed to grab Garret's hand and pulled him away from the firing line just in time.

 

       "Be careful you idiot!! Just because you survived the venom doesn't mean you are invincible!! We have to get out of here now!! "

 

            " But Val, your leg is...."

 

       "It will heal in time, come on let's get outta here!!"

 

       "Give me your hand, I'll carry you to that shelter over there"

 

       "Oh what am I, a damsel in distress? I can run!!

       

       The chopper was coming back for another attempt on his life, but Garret quickly picked Val up and ran towards the nearest shelter with her on his arms. He can feel his legs moving faster than ever, and his speed was fast enough to evade all the bullets fired at him, he managed to get Val under a solid cover and hid from the chopper's sight.

 

       "Garret.....you can let me go now. this position is quite....uncomfortable"

 

       "Ah, sorry, are you injured?"

 

       "Well, aside from my leg and some adrenaline rush, I'm quite fine actually. But seriously, we've gotta do something about the choppers. They're blocking our way toward their carriers and the children."

 

       "I know, the children are inside....okay, wait here, I'll take them all down and give Salazar an opening."

 

       "Garret......are you okay? You may have escaped death once but...."

 

       "It's going to be fine Val, I won't die so easily. Now try to get Salazar on the line, tell him to go right after the carriers when I took all these choppers down"

 

       Garret rushed out into the open turned around toward the chopper approaching him. He put his hand up toward the approaching chopper and sent a huge bolt of lightning at it. The bolt hit the hull and it exploded instantly, sending metal pieces all over the place.

 

       He sensed another 2 choppers coming behind his back and quickly turned toward them.  He put his hand up into the sky and suddenly, the clouds around the area swiftly came together. The cluster of clouds formed a huge lightning storm in the sky, darkening the whole area.

       Garret quickly called down barrages of lightning bolt from the clouds, completely obliterating the machines in an instant. Val could only stare in awe at Garret’s display of power. she picked up the radio slowly and called Salazar.

 

       "Salazar...the choppers are all down. Garret blew them all up. I think you can get to the children now....."

 

       "I got it, don't worry, while Garret and you were busy keeping the choppers at bay, we got to their carriers in time and got all the children out safely. The remaining militias are high-tailing out one by one, I'm on my way to you now, so sit tight and hold on......and Val, maybe you should check up on him.....all these stress couldn't be healthy to a man who just chesated death by an inch."

 

       "Copy your last.....Valora out."

 

       Val turn the off the radio, she looked at Garret standing amidst the destruction he wrought upon the enemy choppers. Val could see the look on Garret's face clearly with her eagle eyes, he was not smiling nor enjoying what he did, the only emotion she could see in his face was sadness.

 

       She decided to make her way toward him soon as her regeneration kicked in and enabled her to walk. When she got to him, Garret turned to her and smiled. Valora knew it was just a formality, she knew his mind was breaking apart inside from all the tension he just experienced.

 

       "Garret....are you alright?"

            "I'm fine Val.....I managed to keep you and everyone safe....that's enough to make me happy"

       "Look....you don't have to pretend you enjoy it. None of us wanted to do any of this, but we had no choice. They gave us no quarter and we all would've died if you didn't take them out first."

 

       "No choice? Val, I could've just disabled their rotor and gave them a chance to escape....I could have at least kept them alive....those people inside the chopper could've had a family waiting for them at home. They could have a lover waiting for them to come back....but I took their life in a matter of seconds. And the worst part of all this is that I didn't even think it through when I decided to blast them to pieces......I'm a murderer....a cold-blooded one at that....I could've done it differently but I chose to kill them....how am I different than them then? This power....it is good and all, but I think....I'm turning into a monster because of it."

 

       "Garret.....you are not a murderer or a monster. You are still human, we are all human on the inside. It doesn't matter what kind of power you have, as long as you don't take pleasure in killing, then you're still human. I don't relish all these death and destruction as much as you do...but sometimes.....we just had to do it to stay alive."

 

       "Val....."

 

       "Look, if you're not convinced then we can talk at length later, for now we've got to regroup and plan our next move.....don't worry Garret, whatever happens from now on,  I'll always be beside you."

 

       "I....thanks Val."

 

       "Hey, what kind of a friend would I be if I back out now? Come on, Salazar should be here any moment. I doubt this would be the end of the attacks, we have to get out of here and find a new place."

 

       Garret followed Val back to the cover, where Salazar has been waiting for them, he turned back to see the piece of burning metal he made and quickly turned away from it. The rain started to come down from the electric cloud he made and it extinguished all the fire in field and the village. The sky started to clear up and the sunlight touches the ground again. Garret came to a quick realization that the sadness he felt minutes ago was already gone, along with all the regret he felt. But he knew in his heart that no matter how long time will pass, he would never forget this day. The day that he first took human life by his own hands......the day he stopped being....The Fugitive.

เทพสายฟ้าจุติ

       วาลอร่าแทบไม่เชื่อสายตาของตนเองเมื่อเธอวิ่งเข้ามาในห้องแล็บ ความเจ็บปวดที่ขาขวาของเธอหายไปในบัดดลหลังจากที่เธอเห็นร่างไร้วิญญาณของแกเร็ตลอยอยู่ในถังที่เต็มไปด้วยเลือด

 

       เธอหวาดวิตกและกรีดร้องออกมาอย่างไม่เคยเป็นมาก่อน ใบหน้าของเธอเปียกโชกไปด้วยเหงื่อที่ไหลออกมาอย่างไม่หยุดยั้ง และขาทั้งสองข้างของเธอก็กลายเป็นเป็นอัมพาตไปอย่างรวดเร็ว แต่ถึงแม้ว่าวาลอร่าจะยังคงตื่นตระหนกกับภาพอันน่าสยดสยองที่เธอเห็นอยู่ก็ตาม เธอก็มองเห็นถึงสิ่งที่น่าประหลาดใจ.......ในถังน้ำที่เต็มไปด้วยเลือดสีแดงฉานนั้น ไม่มีร่องรอยของยาพิษมรณะเหลืออยู่เลยแม้แต่หยดเดียว

 

 

 

หลังจากที่อาการซ็อกหายไปและเสียงกรีดร้องของเธอหยุดลง วาลอร่าก็รีบวิ่งเข้าไปหาแท่นควบคุมถังเพื่อที่จะเปิดมันออก ในตอนนั้นเอง ซาซาร์ก็ได้โทรเรียกเข้ามาทางวิทยุสื่อสารของเธอ

 

       “วาลอร่า!! ได้ยินรึเปล่า!!? ตอนนี้การสู้รบข้างนอกเริ่มจะดีขึ้นแล้ว ส่วนริงโกะตอนนี้ก็ปลอดภัยอยู่กับพวกที่ห้องพยาบาล การต่อสู้ครั้งนี้ใกล้จะจบแล้ว”

 

“แล้วเด็กๆคนอื่นๆในหมู่บ้านล่ะ ครั้งสุดท้ายทั้นใด้ยิน พวกนั้นกำลัง...”

 

“ตอนนี้พวกมันกำลังพาตัวเด็กๆเข้าไปในยานลำเลียง ตอนนี้พวกเราเข้าไปช่วยไม่ได้เพราะไอ้เฮลิคอปเตอร์ที่พวกมันเอามาด้วยยังขวางทางอยู่  ตอนนี้พวกเราเลยทำได้แค่ยิงใส่ยานลำเลียงของพวกมันเพื่อถ่วงเวลาก็เท่านั้นเอง แกเร็ตล่ะเป็นยังไงบ้าง?”

 

“แกเร็ต......อยู่ในถังยาพิษน่ะ.....ไอ้หมอนี่มันลงไปอยู่ข้างในตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่ก็ไม่รู้....”

 

“เฮ้ย!! อะไรนะ !! แล้วไอ้หมอนั่นยังมีชีวิตอยู่มั้ย!!? เราต้องใช้พลังของเขาเพื่อจัดการกับเฮลิคอปเตอร์พวกนี้นะ”

 

“ชั้นไม่รู้....ไอ้แผงควบคุมนี่ก็ไม่แสดงสัญญาณชีพจรเลย..แล้วในถังก็มีแต่เลือดเต็มไปหมด....ซาลาซาร์....ในถังนี่ไม่มียาพิษเหลืออยู่เลยนะ ไม่มีเลยแม้แต่หยดเดียว...ชั้น...ชั้นไม่รู้จะทำยังไงแล้ว......”

 

“วาลอร่า!! ควบคุมตัวเองหน่อย!! แล้วตอบชั้นมาชัดๆว่ามันเกิดบ้าอะไรขึ้นนั้น แกเร็ตกำลังกลายเป็นเหมือนพวกนั้นรึเปล่า มีร่องรอยการกลายพันธุ์มั้ย”

 

“ไม่...ตอนนี้ไม่มีการเปลี่ยนเปลี่ยนแปลงของร่างกายที่เห็ได้ชัดเลย แต่ว่าในถังมันไม่มีอะไรเหลือเลยนะซาลาซาร์....จะให้ชั้นทำยังไงด๊ หมอนี่ไม่มีชีพจรเต้นอยู่เลยนพ.....เข้าไม่มีสัญญาณชีพจรเลย!! แล้วถ้ายาพิษหายไปหมด มันก็เป็นได้แค่อย่างเดียวแล้วนี่!!”

 

“นี่!! ใจเย็นๆก่อนยัยหนู ตอนนี้ที่เธอจะทำได้คือเอาตัวหมอนั่นออกมาจากถังซะ ถ้าไม่มียาพิษเหลืออยู่เลยก็ปลอดภัยแล้ว ตอนนี้เรายังไม่รู้ว่าแกเร็ตยังมีชีวิตอยู่รึเปล่า เพราะงั้นอย่าพึ่งหมดหวังไป....”

 

“ไม่รู้งั้นหรอ!!! ไม่รู้อะไรกันเล่า!! หมอนี่ไม่มีชีพจรเลยนะ!! เขาตายแล้วซาลาซาร์!! ชั้นทำให้เขาต้องกลายเป็นศพแบบนี้!! ชั้นเป็นคนที่ทำลายความหวังสุดท้ายของพวกเราลง….แล้วก็...เลือด.....เลือดเต็มไปหมดเลย...ชั้น...ชั้นช่วยเค้าไม่ได้...ชั้น....”

 

วาลอร่าทรุดเข่าลง ปากของเธอไม่เปล่งเสียงอะไรออกมาอีกเลย เธอไม่สามารถแม้แต่จะหันไปมองถังน้ำโชกเลือดนั้นได้อีกครั้ง ดวงตาสีเหลืองของเธอเริ่มเปียกไปด้วยน้ำตา ในขณะที่สติสัมปชัญญะของเธอเริ่มจางหายไปเรื่อยๆ ถึงแม้ว่าซาลาซาร์จะตะโกนเรียกชื่อเธออย่างสุดเสียงผ่านวิทยุ ถึงแม้ว่าข้างนอกห้องแล็บที่เธออยู่จะดังก้องไปด้วยเสียงระเบิดและเสียงกรีดร้อง วาลอร่าก็ไม่สามารถได้ยินอะไรได้เลยนอกจากเสียงน้ำตาของเธอที่ตกลงไปกระทบกับพื้นห้องเท่านั้นเอง

 

       ทันใดนั้น เสียงของเครื่องตรวจชีพจรก็ดังขึ้น เสียงของมันก้องกังวานไปรอบห้องและเรียกคืนสติของวาลอร่ากลับมาในที่สุด เธอปาดน้ำตาของเธอทิ้งไปอย่างรวดเร็วและจ้องมองไปที่แท่นควบคุมอย่างฉงน

 

       “ซาลาซาร์.....ชั้นคิดว่าชั้นได้ยิน.....เสียงสัญญาณชีพจรมาจากแท่นควบคุม....”

 

       วาลอร่าเดินเข้าไปหาถังน้ำที่เต็มไปด้วยเลือดอย่างช้าๆ สายตาของเธอพยายามสาดส่องหาตัวของแกเร็ตที่อยู่ข้างใน แต่ถึงแม้ว่าเธอจะมีสายตาที่เฉียบคมของนกอินทรีย์ก็ตาม เธอก็ไม่สารถมองผ่านเลือดสีแดงฉานจำนวนมากที่บังทัศน์วิสัยของเธอได้

       ทันใดนั้นเอง ก็มีมือข้างหนึ่งแล่นผ่านน้ำเลือดมากระแทกกระจกของถังอย่างจัง ทำให้วาลอร่าตกใจกลัวและถอยหนีออกมาอย่างรวดเร็ว เธอจ้องมองไปที่แท่นควบคุมและเห็นสัญญาณชีพจรที่เต้นเร็วขึ้นเรื่อยๆ หลังจากที่เธอรวบรวมความกล้าได้แล้ว เธอก็เดินเข้าไปหาถังยาพิษอีกครั้ง เลือดที่ลอยอยู่ในถังนั้นเริ่มจางลงเรื่อยๆ วาลอร่าจ้องมองอย่างไมละสายตาในขณะที่เลือดในถังถูกสูบเข้าไปที่จุดเดียว และในที่สุดเธอก็มองเห็นแกเร็ตที่อยู่ข้างใน พร้อมกับเลือดที่ไหลกลับเข้าไปในตัวของเขาอย่างรวดเร็ว เธอจ้องมองแกเร็ตอย่างไม่ละสายตา จนกระทั่งเขาลืมตาขึ้นมาอย่างช้าๆ

 

       “ซาลาซาร์ ชั้นเห็นแกเร็ตแล้ว!! ชีพจรของเขากำลังกลับเข้าสภาพปกติเรื่อยๆ.....แกเร็ตยังไมตาย!!”

 

       “จริงหรอ!!? งั้นก็เยี่ยมไปเลยนี่นา เอ้อ แล้วสภาพของหมอนั่นเป็นไงมั่ง ยังเป็นผู้เป็นคนอยู่มั้ย”

 

       “ใช่ แกเร็ตยังเป็นคนปกติอยู่....แต่เขาดูอ่อนแอมากเลย...เดี๋ยวชั้นจะพาเขาออกมาเอง รีบๆมาเร็วเข้าซาลาซาร์”

 

       “โอเค ชั้นกำลังจwะปแล้ว ยื้อชีวิตของหมอนั่นไปพลางๆก่อนระหว่างที่ชั้น....เดี๋ยวนะ....เฮ้ย!! วาลอร่า!! รีบพาแกเร็ตออกมาเร็วเข้า!!! พวกมันส่งเฮลิคอปเตอร์ลำนึงไปทางเธอแล้ว!!!”

 

       วาลอร่าวิ่งแจ้นไปที่แผงควบคุมและเปิดฝาถังออก แต่ก่อนที่เธอจะสามารถพาแกเร็ตออกมาจากถังได้นั้น ก็มีเสียงระเบิดดังขึ้นจากด้านบน เฮลิคอปเตอร์ลำนั้นได้ยิงจรวดใส่ฐานลับอย่างจัง ทำให้ห้องแล็บที่เธอกับแกเร็ตอยู่นั้นถูกฝังลงใต้ดิน

 

       "วาลอร่า!! วาลอร่า!! ได้ยินมั้ย!!? ฐานลับของถูกไฟเผาเป็นจุลไปแล้ว!! เธอปลอดภัยรึเปล่า!!"

 

       วาลอร่าผลักก้อนหินที่หล่นลงมาทับขาเธออย่างสุดแรงและลุกขึ้น เธอเกาะเศษก้อนหินที่อยู่ข้างๆเพือพยุงตัวเองไว้และหยิบวิทยุสื่อสารขึ้น

 

       "ชั้นไม่เป็นไร..นี่มันเกิดอะไรขึ้น....."

 

       "ไอ้เฮลิคอปเตอร์บ้านั่นมันยิงจรวดใส่ฐานของเราจบเรียบเป้นหน้ากลอบเลย ในนั้นมีใครบาดเจ็บบ้างมั้ย"

 

                                                                     "ไม่...ไม่น่าจะมีหรอก ตอนที่ชั้นกลับมาถึง ทุกคนก็หนีไปอยู่ในห้องนิรภัยหมดแล้ว ถ้าจะมีใครเจ็บก็คงจะมีแต่ชั้นกับ.......ไม่นะ แกเร็ต!!!!!!"

 

       "วาลอร่า!! ชั้นกำลังวิ่งกลับไปแล้ว ระวังตัวด้วยนะ ถึงตอนนี้จะไม่เป็นไร แต่ตัวอาคารมันเริ่มสั่นแล้ว"

 

       ก่อนทีวาลอร่าจะตอบซาลาซาร์ได้ เธอก็รู้สึกถึงแรงสั่นสะเทือนขนาดใหญ่จากด้านบนอีกครั้ง ตามที่ซาลาซาร์บอก อาคารทั้งหมกนั้นได้รับแรงกระแทกจากระเบิดจนไม่สเถียรอีกต่อไป เธอมองขึ้นไปข้างบนเพดานของห้องและที่อยู่ตรงหน้าของเธอ คือก้อนคอนกรีตขนาดใหญ่ที่กำลังร่วงลงมาใกล้ทุกขณะ

 

       วาลอร่าพยายามอย่างสุดกำลงัที่จะหลบออกจาบริเวณนั้น แต่ขาขวาของเธอที่ถูกหินทับนั้นไม่สามารถขยับได้อย่างที่เธอคิด เธอทำได้เพียงปิดตาลงและร้องออกมาด้วยความกลัว ในขณะที่ก้อนคอนกรีตเริ่มใกล้เข้ามาเรื่อยๆ

 

       แต่ทีนใดนั้นเอง ก็มีเสียงของกระแสไฟฟ้าดังขึ้นจากอีกฟากของห้อง และในระยะเวลาอันสั้น ก็มีเสียงระเบิดดังขึ้นอีกครั้ง

 

       วาลอร่ารู้สึกตัวอีกครั้งและก็รู้สึกได้ถึงกระแสลมที่กรรโชกผ่านใบหน้าและเส้นผมของเธอลมเย็นๆที่ลอยผ่านตัวเธอไปเมื่อครู่นั้น ทำให้เธอรู้สึกเหมือนกำลังยืนอยู่บนยอดเขาที่มีอากาศปลอดโปร่ง บรรยากาศนั้นต่างกับใต้ซากปรักหักพังของฐานลับเมื่อครู่อย่างสิ้นเชิง เธอเปิดตาขึ้นอย่างช้าๆ และก็ได้เห็นแกเร็ตที่กำลังทำลายชิ้นส่วนคอนกรีตที่ตกลงมาอย่างต่อเนื่องอย่างง่ายดาย

 

       วาลอร่านั้นตื่นตะลึงกับภาพที่เธอเห็นตรงหน้า แกเร็ตที่เมื่อไม่กีนาทีก่อนนั้นดูอ่อนแอและเสียเลือดอย่างมากนั้น ตอนนี้ได้มายืนอยู่ข้างหน้าเธอและปกป้องเธอจากอันตราย วาลอร่าไม่สามารถสรรหาคำพูดใดๆที่จะอธิบายความโล่งอกและดีใจของเธอได้ลย แต่ทันใดนั้นเอง เธอก็รู้สึกได้ถึงอัตรายบางอย่างและเริ่มถอยหนีออกมาจากแกเร็ต

 

       "นี่....แกเร็ต...นาย สบายดีรึเปล่า"

 

       แกเร็ตหันไปหาเธออย่างรวดเร็ว ตาทั้งสองข้างของเขานั้นเรืองไปด้วยแวงสีขาว และทั่วตัวของเขานั้นก็มีกระแสไฟฟ้าขนาดใหญ่วนอยู่รอบๆ มือของเขานั้นถูกห่อหุ้มไปด้วยพลังงานไฟฟ้าที่แล่นไปมาอย่างรวดเร็ว

 

       วาลอร่าตกใจกลัวและถอยหนีออกมาอย่างช้าๆ สายตาของเธอนั้นสาดส่องหาอะไรก็ตามที่จะเอามาป้องกันตนเองได้ มือของเธอนั้นชุ่มไปด้วยเหงื่อ และความคิดของเธอนั้นเต้มไปด้วยความกลัว.....จนกระทั่งแกเร็ตหัวเราะออกมา

 

       "อะไรกันวาล นี่เธอกลัวชั้นงั้นหรอ? ไม่เอาน่ายัยเจ้าสำนวน นี่ชั้นพึ่งช่วยไม่ให้เธอกลายเป้นมันบดติดพื้นเมื่อกี้เองนะ"

 

       "แล้ว....แล้วชั้นจะไปตรัสรู้ยังไงละยะ ว่านายยังคงเป้นแกเร็ตที่ชั้นรู้จักน่ะ ไอ้ยาพิษนรกนั้นอาจจะทำให้นายกลายเป็นแบบไอ้พวกนั้นก็ได้ ใครจะไปรู้"

 

       "เอาน่า ไม่เป้นไรหรอก นี่ชั้นก็ยังตลกโปกฮากับเธออยู่เลยไม่ใช่รึไงกัน"

 

       แกเร็ตยื่นมือของเขาให้วาลอร่าและยิ้มให้เธอ ซึ่งวาลอร่านั้นก็จับไว้อย่างไม่ลังเลและพยุงตัวขึ้นอย่างช้าๆ

 

       "แกเร็ต.....นายรู้สึกยังไงบ้าง มีความรู้สึกอะไรแปลกๆหรือมึนหัวอะไรมั้ย"

 

       "ก็ไม่นะ...ทำไมหรอ"

 

       "ก็...ตอนแรกที่ชั้นโดนฉีกยาพิษเข้าไปนี่อ้วกออกมาเป้นเลือดเลยน่ะสิ...ก้เลยคิดว่านาย.....เอาเถอะ ช่างมัน ว่าแต่นายรู้สึกยังไงมั่งเนี่ย"

 

       "ดีกว่าที่เคยเป็นมาเลยหล่ะ มันเหมือนกับมีกระแสไฟฟ้าแล่นผ่านไปทั่วร่างกายอยู่ตลอดเลย แล้วก็....ชั้นรู้สึกได้ถึงสัญญาณชีพจร คลื่นวิทยุ นี่ชั้น....ได้ยินแม้แต่เสียงที่ทุกๆคนกำลังคุยกันด้วย....นี่มันสุดยอดไปเลย!! พลีงนี่มันมากกว่าที่ชั้นคิดไว้ซะอีก....เดี๋ยวนะ วาล นี่ขาเธอ...."

 

       "ไม่เป็นไรหรอก เดี่ยวก็หายแล้ว แผลแค่นี้เอง"

 

       แกเร็ตรีบพยุงวาลอร่าขึ้นทันทีเมื่อเขาเห็นแผลทีขาของเธอ เมื่อเขามองดูใกล้ๆแล้ว เขาก็เห็นของเหลวสีดำที่คล้ายกับยาพิษมรณะกำลังซ่อนแซมขาของวาลอร่าอยู่อย่างรวดเร็ว แกเร็ตชะงักไปชั่วครู่ จรกระทั่งเขารู้สึกได้ถึงอะไรบางอย่างที่กำลังเคลื่อนตัวเข้ามาหาเขาอย่างรวดเร็ว

 

       "แกเร็ต!! วาลอร่า!! ไอ้เฮลิคอปเตอรืบ้านั่นกำลังวกกลับไปหาพวกนายแล้ว!! วิ่งออกมาจากตรงนั้นเร็วเข้า!!"

 

       ซาลาซาร์ตะโกนอย่างสุดเสียงผ่านวิทยุสื่อสารเพื่อเตือนทั้งสองคน แกเร็ตนั้นยังคงตกใจอยู่ในขณะที่เฮลิคอปเตอร์นั้นใกล้เข้ามาเรื่อยๆ แต่ก่อนที่เขาจะถูกยิงจนตัวพรุนนั้น วาลอร่าก็ได้ดึงเขาหลบออกมาได้อย่างทันท่วงที

 

       "ระวังตัวหน่อยสิตาทึ่มเอ้ย!! นี่แค่นายรอกดมาจากยาพิษได้ไม่ได้แปลว่านายเป็นอมตะนะ!! เราต้องออกไปจากตรงนี้ให้เร็วที่สุด ไปเร็วเข้า!!"

 

       "แต่ว่า ขาของเธอ..."

 

       "ก็บอกแล้วว่าเดี๋ยวก็หาย!! เร็วๆเข้าซี่!!!"

 

       "ส่งมือมา เดี๋ยวชั้นแบกเธอไปที่หลบภัยเอง"

 

       "นี่นายเห็นชั้นเป้นเจ้าหญิงบนหอคอยงั้นหรอ!! ชั้นวิ่งได้เฟ้ย!!"

 

       ทั้งสองคนออกวิ่งอย่างสุดแรงในขณะที่เฮลิคอปเตอร์ได้วกกลับมาอีกครั้ง เฮลิคอปเตอร์นั้นไล่ตามหลังมาเรื่อยๆก็หมดแรงและล้มลง ในตอนนั้นเอง แกเร็ตก็ได้วิ่งวกกลับมาเพื่อแบกวาลอร่าขึ้นบนแขนเขาอย่างฉับไวและเริ่มวิ่งอีกครั้ง ในระหว่างที่วิ่งอยู่นั้น แกเร็ตก็รู้สึกได้ถึงความเร็วของเขาที่เริ่มจะผิดมนุษย์มนา เขาสามารถหลบกระสุนทุกนัดที่เฮลิคอปเตอรำนั้นยิงมาใส่ได้อย่างง่ายดาย จนกระทั่งเขาสามารถพาวาลอร่าเข้าไปหลบในที่ปลอดภัยได้ในที่สุด

 

       "แกเร็ต....ปล่อยฉันลงได้แล้ว....สภาพแบบนี้มัน.....น่าอายแปลกๆนะ"      

 

       "อ้ะ...โทษที แต่ว่าเธอบาดเจ็บตรงไหนรึเปล่า.."

 

       "ไม่หรอก...นอกจากขาทีกำลังรักษาอยู่ก็ไม่มีอะไรแล้วหล่ะ แต่เอาจริงๆนะ เราควรจะทำอะไรซักอย่างกับไอ้คอปเตอร์บ้านี่ได้แล้ว มันเป้นสิ่งเดียวที่ขวางเราอยู่"

 

       "ชั้นรู้แล้วว่าพวกเด็กๆถูกจับไป แล้วไอ้พวกเฮลิคอปเตอร์นี่ทำให้พวกเราไปช่วยไม่ได้ วาล เธอบอกซาลาซาร์ให้เข้าไปจัดการได้เลย ชั้นจะเล่นงานไอ้พวกนี้เอง"

 

       "แกเร็ต....นายไหวแน่นะ"

 

       "ไม่เป็นไรหรอกน่า ชั้นไม่ยอมตายง่ายๆหรอก เธอน่ะอยู่เฉยๆแล้วส่งสัญญาณให้พวกซาลาซาร์ก็พอแล้ว เดี๋ยวชั้นกลับมา"

 

       แกเร็ตวิ่งออกไปสู่ที่กว้างอีกครั้งและหันไปทางเฮลิคอปเตอร์ที่บินเข้ามาหาเขาอย่างรวดเร็ว ในขณะที่เฮลิคอปเตอร์ลำนั้นใกล้เข้ามาเรื่อยๆ กเร็ตก็ยกมือของเขาขึ้น และปล่อยคลื่นพลังไฟฟ้าขนาดใหญ่เข้าใส่อย่างจัง เฮลิคอปเตอร์ลำนั้นระเบิดออกทันทีที่คลื่นพลังของแกเร็ตส่งไปถึง เหลือแค่เพียงเศษเหล็กที่ลุกไหม้ตกลงมาจากท้องฟ้า

 

       แกเร็ตรู้สึกได้ถึงเฮลิคอปเตอร์อีก 2 ลำที่ใกล้เข้ามาจากทางด้านหลังและหันปหาอย่างรวดเร็ว เขายกมือขึ้นไปบนท้องฟ้าและปล่อยกระแสไฟฟ้าขึ้นไปอย่างรวดเร็ว ทันใดนั้นเอง กลุ่มเมฆที่ลอยอยู่ก็จับตัวเป็นพายุไฟฟ้าขนาดใหญ่บดบังท้องฟ้าในบริเวณนั้นทั้งหมด ในตอนนั้นเอง แกเร็ตก็ได้เรียกสายฟ้าลงมาจากกลุ่มเมฆอย่าไม่หยุดยั้ง และทำลายเฮลิคอปเตอร์ทั้งสองลำลงอย่างไม่เหลือชิ้นดี

 

       วาลอร่าที่นั่งหลบอยู่ในที่หลบภัยได้แต่ตกตลึงกับพลังที่ไม่อาจหยั่งถึงได้ของแกเร็ตและมองเขาอย่างไม่ลพสายตา ในขณะเดียวกัน เธอก็หยิบวิทยุสื่อสารขึ้น

 

"ซาลาซาร์....พวดเฮลิคอปเตอร์กลายเป็นเศษเหล็กไปแล้ว....แกเร็ตระเบิดพวกมันทิ้งไม่เหลือซากเลย ตอนนี้คุณไปช่วยพวกเด็กๆได้แล้วหล่ะ"

 

       "ชั้นเห้นแล้ว ไม่ต้องห่วงนะวาลอร่า ระหว่างที่เธอกับแกเร็ตดึงความสนใจของพวกนั้น ชั้นกับทุกคนก็พาตัวเด็กๆออกมาได้อย่างปลอดภัยแล้วหล่ะ ตอนนี้พวกทหารที่เหลือก็กำลังถอยร่นออกไปทีละคนแล้ว ชั้นกำลังไปหาพวกเธอ พักอยู่ตรงนั้นไปก่อนเถอะ.....วาลอร่า....เธอน่าจะไปดูอาการของหมอนั่นหน่อยนะ ความเครียดที่ถาโถมเข้ามาแบบนี้มันไม่ดีกับสภาพจิตใจของเขาแน่ๆ"

 

       "เข้าใจแล้วค่ะ เลิกกันแค่นี้ก็แล้วกัน"

 

       วาลอร่าปิดวิทยุสื่อสารลง เธอจ้องมองแกเร็ตที่ยืนนิ่งอยู่ท่ามกลางซากปรักหักพังของเฮลิคอปเตอร์ที่ร่วงลงมาจากฟ้าทุกขณะ วาลอร่าสามารถมองเห็นใบหน้าของแกเร็ตได้อย่างชัดเจนด้วยสายตาอันเฉียบคมของเธอ แต่ใบหน้าที่เธอเห็นนั้น ไม่ได้เต็มไปด้วยความสุขหรือความสะใจ สิ่งเดียวที่เธอเห็นนั้น คือความโศกเศร้า

 

       เธอเริ่มเดินไปหาแกเร็ตหลังจากที่ขาของเธอดีขึ้นในระดับหนึ่ง เมื่อเธอเข้าไปใกล้ แกเร็ตก็ได้หันมายิ้มให้กับเธอ แต่วาลอร่ารู้ดีว่าร้อยยิ้มนั้นเป็นแค่การแสดง เธอพอจะดูออกว่าในหัวของแกเร็ตนั้นกำลังแตกออกเป็นเสี่ยงๆจากความเครียดที่เขาพึ่งรู้สึกเมื่อครู่

 

       "แกเร็ต....นายเป้นอะไรรึเปล่า"

 

       "ไม่เป้นอะไรหรอก.....ชั้นปกป้องเธอกับทุกๆคนได้แล้วนี่นะ...แค่นั้นก็พอแล้วหล่ะ"

 

       "นี่....นายไม่ต้องทำเป็นไม่รู้สึกหรอกนะ.....พวกเราทุกคนก็ไม่อยากทำแบบนี้หรอก แต่เราไม่มีทางเลือก พวกนั้นมันไม่คิดจะจับเป็นพวกเราชัดๆ แล้วถ้านายไม่ระเบิดพวกเฮลิคอปเตอร์ทิ้ง พวกเราคงจะตายกันหมดแล้ว"

 

       "ไม่มีทางเลือกงั้นหรอ? วาล ถ้าชั้นทำแค่หยุดการทำงานของใบพัดอย่างเดียว พวกที่อยู่ข้างในนั้นก็ไม่ต้องมาตายแบบนี้หรอกนะ....ชั้นช่วยไม่ให้พวกนั้นตายได้ แต่ก็ไม่ได้ทำ!!คนพวกนั้นอาจจะมีครอบครัวที่รออยู่ที่บ้าน มีคนรักที่จะต้องกลับไปหา แต่ชั้นก็ฆ่าพวกเค้าในเวลาแค่ 3 วิแบบไม่ลังเลเลย!! ที่แย่ที่สุดคือชั้นไม่ได้แม้แต่จะคิดให้ถี่ถ้วนก่อนจะฆ่าพวกเค้าทิ้งด้วยซ้ำ!! แบบนี้ชั้นก็เป็นแค่ฆาตกรเลือดเย็นไม่ใช่รึไงกัน!! แล้วจะไปต่างอะไรกับพวกนั้นล่ะ.....พลังที่ได้รับมามันก็ดูดีดูเทห์นะ....แต่ว่าถ้าแบบนี้ มันก็แค่กำลังทำให้ชั้นกลายเป็นสัตว์ประหลาดไม่ใช่รึไงกัน....."

 

       "แกเร็ต...นายไม่ใช่ฆาตกร แล้วก็ไม่ใช่สัตว์ประหลาดด้วย มันไม่สำคัญหรอกนะว่านายมีพลังอะไร หรือทำอะไรลงไปบ้าง ขอแค่นายไม่ได้ดีอกดีใจกับการฆ่าหรือทำลายล้าง นายก็ยังจะเป็นมนุษย์ต่อไปเรื่อยๆจนตายนั่นแหละ!! ชั้นเองก็ไม่ได้ชอบอกชอบใจอะไรกับเรื่องพวกนี้หรอกนะ แต่ว่าบางครั้ง.....เราก็ต้องทำแบบนี้เพื่อที่จะมีชีวิตรอดต่อไป....ก็เท่านั้นเอง"

 

       "วาล....."

 

       "นี่...ถ้านายยังไม่ปักใจเชื่อก็ไม่เป้นไร ไว้เราคุยกันต่อที่หลังก็ได้ แต่ตอนนี้เราต้องรีบไปพัหฟื้นและวางแผนว่าจะทำยังไงต่อไป....ไม่ต้องห่วงหรอกนะแกเร็ต ไม่ว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้นต่อจากนี้ ชั้นก็จะอยู่ข้างนายไม่ไปไหนหรอก"

 

       "......ขอบใจนะ...วาล"

 

       "โธ่เอ้ยพ่อคนสมองทึบ ชั้นจะเป็นเพื่อนแบบไหนกันถ้าหนีไปตอนนี้ล่ะ? มาเร็ว ซาลาซาร์น่าจะมาถึงในเร็วๆนี้แล้วหล่ะ พวกเราต้องรีบวางแผนกันต่อให้เร็วที่สุด เพราะชั้นก็ไม่คิดหรอกนะว่าเจ้าพวกบ้านั่นจะหยุดแค่นี้ เราต้องหนีไปที่อื่นแล้วหล่ะ....."

 

       แกเร็ตเดินตามวาลอร่าไปที่จุดนัดพบ ซึ่งซาลาซาร์นั้นได้ยืนรออยู่แล้ว เขาหันกลับไปมองเศษซากของเฮลิคอปเตอร์ที่กำลังลุกไหม้อยู่ด้านหลังชั่วขณะและเดินต่อไปเรื่อยๆ ฝนเริ่มตกลงมาจากกลุ่มเมฆที่แกเร็ตสร้างขึ้นและดับไฟที่ลุกไหม้บนสนามรบกับหมู่บ้านอย่างรวดเร็ว และไม่นานหลังจากนั้น กลุ่มเมฆก็สลายตัวไป และแสงอาทิตย์ก็ได้สาดส่องลงมาถึงพื้นดินอีกครั้ง ทันใดนั้นเอง แกเร็ตก็รู้สึกได้ถึงความโศกเศร้าและความรู้สึกผิดที่หายไปจากความคิดของเขาในพริบตา แต่เขาก็รู้อยู่แก่ใจ ว่าไม่ว่าเวลาจะผ่านไปนานขนาดไหน เขาก็ไม่มีวันที่จะลืมเหตุการณ์ในวันนี้ได้ลงอย่างแน่นอน วันนี้เป็นวันแรกที่เขาฆ่ามนุษย์ด้วยกันอย่างไม่ลังเล และเป็นวันสุดท้ายที่เขาจะเป็น......ผู้หลบซ่อน
