Disclosure: This original fictional writing exercise is related to a photo review discussion on Tablo. It is shared by the associated project, not as an independent review. AI helped draft it.

Imagine two siblings finding an old digital photograph in a family box. One notices an awkward flash and wants to crop away the clutter. The other recognises a small object at the edge and worries that the crop would erase a clue to the day. The people and situation are invented; this is a writing prompt, not a report of an actual event.

Give each sibling a practical reason for the edit. One may need a clear profile picture, while the other is trying to preserve the scene for a relative who could not attend. Neither needs to be right. The disagreement can reveal what each character thinks a photograph is supposed to keep.

Begin with a physical action instead of an explanation. One character turns the screen away from the window to reduce glare. The other reaches toward the crop handle but stops. Write a few lines of dialogue in which the practical disagreement is clear even though neither person describes the memory directly.

Add a third character who asks an ordinary question. Perhaps they want to know where the picture will be displayed, or whether everyone in the image agreed to share it. The question should change the direction of the conversation without settling it. Let the first two people answer differently.

A visual reference can be useful, but it is optional. The project's y2k editor lets a reader compare an original photograph with colour and grain changes in a browser. I am associated with Y2K Photo Lab. The free download is watermarked and paid Studio has additional controls; consult the site for current details. Other editors work for the same exercise.

If you try the visual part, use only a photograph that you have permission to edit and share. Keep the original separately, make one restrained version, and write down which detail became more or less noticeable. A filter changes appearance; it cannot establish consent or verify the context of a real image.

Now rewrite one paragraph from the viewpoint of the character who preferred the other edit. Keep the visible action the same, but choose a different detail for the narrator to notice. Does that change the reader's understanding without requiring a new explanation?

For discussion: which small object would make your fictional characters disagree, and what would it reveal about their relationship? Please avoid sharing private family photographs or information without everyone's permission. You can complete the writing exercise with an invented image description instead.
