It is always important to find a common ground with people in your community. Usually, many communities face diverse problems. Of course, problem-solving is a challenging process because many people have different preferences. However, it is possible to resolve them democratically.

In our community we had a serious problem with teenagers because at night, instead of going home, they were spending their time on the street. They also initiated social disorder by playing musical instruments and talking loudly in the residential areas. Therefore, our community decided that it is responsible for resolving this problem. In fact, there are some general principles that define community policing and community engagement as one of the most important. Nevertheless, in order to resolve any problem, different groups of people should know how to collaborate with each other.

The key to problem-solving is the ability to determine which theories and skills are necessary to address at the particular planning situation. In our case it was important to involve our community representatives, as well as the police. It is important to stress that the main task of police officers is not only being focused on catching criminal offenders. It is an extremely demanding job that requires a lot of effort as well as special abilities. Miller noticed that the majority of police actions have nothing to do with criminal law enforcement but involve service to the community. Therefore, police should provide public support and should not be hostile to different representatives of communities.

There are many stages of problem-solving. First of all, scanning refers to identifying recurring problems and prioritizing them to select one problem to address . Thus, in order to define the most significant problem it is important to determine whether it concerns public as well as the police. In our case, it was important to resolve the problem with teenagers because they were disturbing neighbors. In addition, the teenagers were also missing their schools and caused problems within their own families. Therefore, it was important to find the best solution and respond to this issue.

It is also necessary to plan each step of solving the problem. The primary principles that guide the community-planning process are as follows: planning is a prescriptive activity, planning should be intuitive, and planning can control future actions (Kelly, 2011). Nevertheless, successful planning is impossible if there is no consensus in community. Gathering opinions from as many members and special-interest groups in the community as possible is the most effective way to achieve consensus (Kelly, 2011). As a result, we created a system where community and police officers could collaborate.

Nowadays, if some member of the community notices a group of teenagers after 11 PM, he can call a special office in police department and report about it. After this call police officers come to have a talk with the teenagers and their families, and they also try to find the reason why children are not at home late at night. In addition, every two hours at night several police officers are checking our community in order to make sure that there are no teenagers on the street.

Last but not least, it is also necessary to analyze the effectiveness of the problem solving. This stage is called assessment. Assessment refers to evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention. In our community, police officers were responsible for analyzing and reporting on the effects of this plan. One month after the program started, the chief of the police department was interviewed by a local newspaper. He described how police measured effectiveness of this plan. Therefore, every day police officers counted telephone calls from people disturbed by teenagers, as well as the number of teenagers, who were caught late at night. Luckily, this program was successful and the number of teenagers on the street significantly decreased.

Overall, the problem-solving requires collaboration between community and police. Each of them needs to understand the importance of the issue and suggest the best solution. In our community we were able to resolve the problem with young teenagers only through effective collaboration with the police officers. Therefore, it is always important to remember that many problems can be resolved if there is a specific goal and plan.
